The Gold Card is the top Luxury Card issued in Japan. The slogan on the official page is "the finest, and one of a kind", and the annual fee is currently 220,000 yen (tax included). The official site announces that from January 2027 it will be revised to 295,000 yen (tax included).

Luxury Card is a brand founded in the United States in 2008 that began issuing in Japan in 2016. This article asks whether the Mastercard Gold Card (the Gold below) earns its fee, with the brand's Black Card as the main point of comparison. The Black Card is covered in a separate article.

Annual fee

Currently 220,000 yen (tax included) for the main member. 295,000 yen (tax included) for applications from January 1, 2027.

Return

A cash back rate of 1.5%. Miles at the equivalent of 0.9 miles per 100 yen, with no transfer cap.

The card

A metal card with 24K gold coating, in Yellow Gold or the Japan-only Rose Gold.

Protection

Personal liability insurance of up to 100 million yen, which the Black Card does not have.

What to know before you apply

The higher the fee, the more the conditions matter. Start with them.

The details below follow the official Luxury Card website as of November 1, 2026. Benefits and services may be suspended or changed without notice. The terms shown at application are the final reference.

The annual fee rises sharply from January 2027

According to the "Notice of annual fee revision" on the official site (dated October 5, 2026), the Gold's fee changes as follows.

Member Before (tax included) After (tax included)
Main member 220,000 yen 295,000 yen
Family member 55,000 yen 73,500 yen

For new applicants, the new fee applies to applications from January 1, 2027. For current members, it applies progressively from fee billings in February 2027. The revised fee for the main member is 75,000 yen higher than today's. This article calculates with both amounts.

A high return still needs very high spending

The return is 1.5%, according to the official site. But recovering the fee through points takes very large spending, as shown below.

Only family members get a free first year

The specification on the official page says the first year is free for family members only. The main member's fee is due from the first year.

Can points recover the Gold's fee?

The central value of the Gold is its 1.5% return. Points are 3 per 200 yen, and cash back is one yen per point. Using only figures from the official page, here is the result.

Annual spending Points earned (1.5%) Against today's 220,000 yen fee Against the revised 295,000 yen fee
12,000,000 yen 180,000 −40,000 yen −115,000 yen
20,000,000 yen 300,000 +80,000 yen +5,000 yen
30,000,000 yen 450,000 +230,000 yen +155,000 yen

To recover today's 220,000 yen from points alone takes about 14,670,000 yen of spending a year (220,000 divided by 1.5%). For the revised 295,000 yen, it takes about 19,670,000 yen. That is about 1,640,000 yen a month on the card. Few people can gather that much on one card. The realistic picture is a business owner or sole proprietor putting costs such as advertising on it.

Compared with the Black Card

The brand's Black Card returns 1.25%. The difference in return is 0.25 points. The difference in fee is 110,000 yen today (110,000 against 220,000), and 145,000 yen after the revision (150,000 against 295,000).

To win back that fee difference through the extra return takes 44,000,000 yen of spending a year today (110,000 divided by 0.25%) and 58,000,000 yen after the revision (145,000 divided by 0.25%). So the extra return alone is hard to justify, and the choice turns on whether you value what is unique to the Gold.

Benefits unique to the Gold

The official page lists the following as "even more than the Black Card":

  • Top-priority slots at rare events: priority entry to member events.
  • Highest rank in status matches: the top tier is applied in partner status programs.
  • Limousine also covers the return trip: the official comparison shows the Black Card's transfer on the outbound trip. The Gold can use its free one-way transfer for either the outbound or the return trip.
  • Movie GIFT: up to three tickets a month.
  • National art museums: collection and special exhibitions are free for a member and one guest at any time. For the Black Card it is Fridays only.
  • Luxury Wellness: unlimited visits at better prices (varying by facility).
  • Personal liability insurance: up to 100 million yen for liability arising in daily life and for death or disability from accidents such as traffic accidents.

These are the materials for judging whether the fee difference is worth it in your life. A person who watches many films, for example, gets three Movie GIFT tickets a month against the Black Card's two.

A 24K gold-coated metal card

The Gold's most visible feature is its 24K gold-coated metal card. Yellow Gold has a mirror-like shine, and Rose Gold is offered as a color available only in Japan. The official page says the card has a weight of about four times that of an ordinary credit card. The World Elite logo is engraved and a chip one size smaller than usual is used.

Some people count the pleasure of owning such a card alongside its practical value. When deciding, consider separately the value that can be measured and the value that cannot.

Travel benefits

Most travel benefits are shared with the Black Card.

Priority Pass

Airport lounges at more than 1,900 locations in more than 600 cities across 148 countries and regions are free to use. Family members are free too, with no limit on visits. Guests are 35 US dollars each.

Domestic lounges and baggage delivery

At major domestic airports, lounges are free with one guest. Baggage on international flights is delivered free, up to three pieces.

Hotel privileges

At more than 5,000 participating hotels worldwide, benefits include room upgrades, breakfast for up to two, early check-in and late check-out. The average value is about 70,000 yen per stay. In addition, the "Elite Plus" status of the HoteLux member hotel booking app, which normally costs 499 US dollars a year (about 70,000 yen), is offered free each year. New registration also gives 2,000 HoteLux points (about 180 US dollars).

Dining and the concierge

Dining and the concierge are as follows.

  • Luxury Dining by LC: a set course is free for three people when up to six book. About 40 restaurants nationwide are included, and apart from some, there is no monthly limit on use.
  • About 250 restaurants: one person's course is free when two book.
  • Luxury Limousine: a free one-way transfer between a specified place in the eligible area and the restaurant. For the Gold, it can be the outbound or the return trip.
  • Concierge: by phone, email and LINE, 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.

If a course costs 20,000 yen per person and six people book, 60,000 yen is free. This is an assumption. Check real restaurants and prices at booking.

Protection

  • Personal liability insurance: up to 100 million yen for injury from traffic accidents and liability in daily life. This is unique to the Gold.
  • Overseas travel accident insurance: up to 120 million yen for death and permanent disability, automatically attached. Domestic travel insurance is also attached.
  • Shopping insurance: damage or theft within 90 days of purchase, up to 3 million yen a year.
  • Fraud compensation: all or part of the loss.

Business owners and sole proprietors

The Gold also has a card for business payments. It allows payments up to 99.9 million yen, and points accrue at the same rate as for shopping. The fee can be booked as an expense, and payment can be deferred by up to 53 days. The official page describes "LC Marketplace", where business-payment Black Diamond and Gold Card members can promote their own services to other card members free of charge.

Basic information

The annual fee is currently 220,000 yen for the main member and 55,000 yen for a family member (tax included). Only for family members, the first year is free. ETC cards and family cards are available as added cards. Applicants must be 20 or over, and students are not eligible. Issue takes as little as five business days. Payment closes on the 5th and is due on the 27th of the same month. The brand is Mastercard.

Different kinds of users

Three scenes follow, all assumptions.

An owner who puts 20,000,000 yen or more a year through the card, expenses included

Above 20,000,000 yen a year, points alone clear today's fee and come close to the revised one. Expense payments and the Gold's unique privileges add together.

Someone around 12,000,000 yen a year

Points alone do not reach the fee. With the Black Card, 12,000,000 yen reaches the revised 150,000 yen fee. People in this range should compare the Black Card.

Someone who values the privileges

Someone who values the top priority event slots, a limousine for either leg, personal liability cover and three Movie GIFT tickets a month will judge on more than points.

First steps after joining

Many benefits are lost unless you plan their use.

  1. Check the privilege details in Luxury Card Online.
  2. Register for Priority Pass. Family members are free too.
  3. Register for HoteLux Elite Plus. It is offered free each year.
  4. Check your fee billing month. It is the second month after the month shown in the expiry date "month/year" on the back of the card.

Reviewing it every year

Because the fee changes substantially in 2027, it is important at each renewal to check that your use still justifies it. Write down your annual spending, the points earned and the benefits you used, and compare with the fee. If it does not justify the fee, consider moving to the Black Card.

Who the card suits

The Gold is the top Luxury Card: a 1.5% return, a 24K gold-coated metal card, top-priority event slots, a limousine for either leg and personal liability insurance. The annual fee is 220,000 yen today and will be 295,000 yen from January 2027.

Three checks help the decision:

  1. Does your annual spending reach 20,000,000 yen? If not, have you compared the Black Card?
  2. Do you value what is unique to the Gold enough to pay the fee difference?
  3. Would you still want the card at 295,000 yen?

If you can answer yes to two or more, the Gold is worth considering. If not, compare the brand's Black Card or a card with a lower fee before you decide.
