American Express launched the Platinum Card in the United States and Canada in 1984. According to the company's own timeline, it was the first new Card product from American Express since 1966, and it was available by invitation only. The name came from the idea that platinum was, at the time, "little known but highly valuable". More than forty years later, the U.S. Consumer Platinum Card has become a card whose price is argued about almost as often as its perks.

This article looks at the U.S. Consumer Platinum Card (the Platinum Card below). The annual fee is $895, and the card comes with a long list of statement credits and travel benefits. The useful question is not how long the list is, but how much of it you will really use.

Annual fee

$895 (Basic Card), as shown on the official page.

Lounges

Over 1,550 airport lounges in the Global Lounge Collection, including Centurion Lounges.

Points

5X Membership Rewards points on flights and on prepaid hotels booked as stated; 1X on other purchases.

Credits

Ten statement credits listed on the page, many requiring enrollment or a qualifying purchase.

What to know before you apply

With a fee this high, the first job is to find where the card can disappoint you.

The details below follow the American Express U.S. website as of October 29, 2026. Benefits, credits and conditions change, and the terms shown at application are the final reference.

The fee is $895 a year

The official page states an annual fee of $895. That is about $75 a month. Whether the card is worth it depends on whether you would spend that much on the things the credits cover anyway.

Nearly every credit has a condition

Most of the headline credits do not arrive on their own. The Resy credit, the digital entertainment credit, the lululemon credit and the Oura Ring credit require enrollment. The Uber One, CLEAR+ and Walmart+ credits require that you buy and pay for the membership with the card. The hotel credit applies to prepaid Fine Hotels + Resorts or The Hotel Collection bookings made through American Express Travel. A credit you do not use returns nothing.

Hotel stays have minimum-night rules

The Hotel Collection requires a minimum two-night stay. The page also says that, effective January 1, 2027, Fine Hotels + Resorts bookings will require a minimum two-night stay to be eligible for the $600 Hotel Credit. One-night trips will not qualify.

Points are valuable in a narrow set of cases

The 5X earn applies to flights booked directly with airlines or through American Express Travel, on up to $500,000 of those purchases per calendar year, and to prepaid hotels booked through American Express Travel. Other purchases earn 1X. If most of your spending is groceries or dining, this card is not designed around that.

Adding up the credits honestly

The official page lists these statement credits. The table adds them up so that you can compare the total with the fee.

Credit Amount on the page Condition in short
Hotel Credit $600 (up to $300 semi-annually) Prepaid Fine Hotels + Resorts or The Hotel Collection through American Express Travel
Uber Cash $200 ($15 monthly plus $20 in December) Card added to your Uber account; rides and orders in the U.S.
Uber One Credit $120 Purchase an auto-renewing Uber One membership with the Card
Airline Fee Credit $200 per calendar year Incidental fees charged by one selected qualifying airline
CLEAR+ Credit $219 per calendar year Sign up and pay for CLEAR+ with the Card
Resy Credit $400 (up to $100 each quarter) Enrollment; eligible Resy purchases
Digital Entertainment Credit $300 (up to $25 a month) Enrollment; participating partners
lululemon Credit $300 (up to $75 each quarter) Enrollment; U.S. stores and lululemon.com
Walmart+ Credit $155 (up to $12.95 a month) Pay for a monthly Walmart+ membership with the Card
Oura Ring Credit $200 per calendar year Enrollment; purchase at ouraring.com

The ten credits add up to $2,694 if every one is used in full. That is the ceiling, not the expectation. American Express says cardmembers can unlock over $3,500 in annual value, a figure that also counts items such as the lounge network, and it describes this as an opportunity for those who can use most or all of the features. Treat it as marketing arithmetic and run your own.

A way to run your own numbers

Go through each credit and ask whether you would have paid for that thing anyway, at a similar price, this year. If you already use Uber monthly, pay for CLEAR+, eat at Resy restaurants and buy from the stores listed, many credits are real savings. If you would have to change your habits to use them, count only the part you will actually use. The sum of what you would have spent anyway is the number to set against $895.

A history of service

The Platinum Card's identity is built on service, and the timeline shows how it grew. In 1988 American Express introduced the Worldwide Personal Assistance program, which was renamed "Platinum Concierge" in 1993, to give Platinum Card members personalized 24/7 service. In 1991 it introduced its "By Invitation Only" program and launched the Fine Hotels + Resorts program for booking stays at top properties with on-site benefits.

In 2013, American Express was the first credit card issuer to open an airport lounge, the Centurion Lounge at Harry Reid International Airport in Las Vegas. Since then the Global Lounge Collection has become a core benefit. In 2017 the card was introduced in a new metal design with an annual Uber Cash credit, points on airfare and prepaid hotels, and an expanded lounge network. A 2021 refresh added credits such as the hotel credit and the CLEAR Plus credit, plus a digital entertainment credit and Global Dining Access by Resy.

That sequence matters when you decide. The card started as an invitation-only product and gradually became a bundle of services and credits. Each addition made the card more useful for people who match it, and harder to judge for people who do not.

Travel benefits

The travel side is where the card is most distinctive.

The Global Lounge Collection

The page says the Global Lounge Collection has over 1,550 airport lounges, which it describes as more than any other credit card company on the market as of January 2026, and puts the annual value at over $850. Access includes Centurion Lounges, 10 Delta Sky Club visits when flying on an eligible Delta flight, Priority Pass membership (enrollment required) and other select partner lounges.

Fine Hotels + Resorts

The page says there are over 1,900 properties worldwide. When you book through AmexTravel.com, you can receive a suite of benefits, including guaranteed 4 PM checkout, with an average total value of $550 in perks, based on 2025 bookings for stays of two nights. Actual value varies by property and by how you use the benefits.

Points on flights and hotels

Flights booked directly with airlines or through American Express Travel earn 5X Membership Rewards points on up to $500,000 per calendar year. Prepaid hotels booked on American Express Travel also earn 5X. Everything else earns 1X.

Dining, entertainment and everyday credits

The dining and everyday side is built on enrollment. The Resy Credit covers eligible purchases at Resy, including dining at over 10,000 qualifying U.S. Resy restaurants. Global Dining Access by Resy adds access to sought-after reservations when you add the card to your Resy profile. The digital entertainment credit covers participating partners. The lululemon credit applies to U.S. retail stores, excluding outlets, and to lululemon.com. The Walmart+ credit covers the monthly membership, and the Oura Ring credit covers a purchase at ouraring.com.

Service and design

Card Member Services is available 24/7, according to the page, for things such as lost Card replacement and statement questions. The page also notes that you can choose a classic metal or mirror card design. The card has a Pay Over Time feature with a variable APR of 19.74% to 28.74% on eligible charges, so unpaid balances carry real interest.

Who the card suits

The Platinum Card suits people who already spend on what its credits cover and who travel often enough to use the lounges and hotel programs. For them, $895 can be recovered. For people who would need to change their habits to use the credits, the fee is a bill for benefits they will not use.

Three checks help the decision:

  1. Which of the ten credits would you have paid for anyway this year, and what do they add up to?
  2. How many nights a year would you book through American Express Travel, for at least two nights each?
  3. How often do you fly through airports where the lounge network helps you?

If your honest total is above $895, the card pays for itself. If it is close, the comfort of the lounges and hotel benefits may decide it. If it is far below, other cards are a better match.
