A premium card for a business is judged by different questions from a personal one. Does it help cash flow? Does it control employee spending? Do the credits match what the company buys? The American Express Business Platinum Card in the United Kingdom (the Business Platinum below) is built around those questions, and it sits at the top of the company's UK business range. American Express itself dates back to 1850, when three rivals merged their businesses.

The annual fee is £650. This article sorts out what the official page promises, what each promise requires from you, and how to count the value for a limited company or limited liability partnership.

Annual fee

£650, as shown on the official page.

Cash flow

Up to 54 days to pay interest free on purchases.

Credits

Up to £600 Amex Travel credit, plus an annual £300 Indeed credit and an annual £150 Dell Technologies credit.

Eligibility

For UK LTD and LLP businesses; the applicant must be a director or member earning at least £35,000 a year.

What to know before you apply

A £650 fee leaves little room for unused benefits, so begin with the cautions.

The details below follow the American Express UK website as of 29 October 2026. Benefits and conditions change, and the terms shown at application are the final reference.

Only certain businesses can apply

The eligibility list says the business must have a current UK bank or building society account and must be a Limited Liability Company (LTD) or a Limited Liability Partnership (LLP). The applicant must be a director or member of the business, aged 18 or over, with a permanent UK home address and an income of at least £35,000 a year. Sole traders are not covered by this card.

Interest-free time is not the same as no interest

The page promises up to 54 days to pay interest free on purchases. It also lists a purchase rate of 29.1% p.a. (variable) that applies if you choose to use a line of credit through the Flexible Payment Option. Interest-free time is a benefit only if you pay on time.

The credits depend on what your company buys

The Indeed and Dell Technologies credits help only a company that recruits through Indeed or buys from Dell. The Amex Travel credit helps only a company that books travel through American Express Travel Online. A credit that does not match your spending returns nothing.

The page does not state some conditions

The page lists a Superscript statement credit of 15% once per year and over £200 a year in partner discounts, but it gives no further figure for them. This article therefore does not put a value on them.

Counting the credits against the fee

The official page names these credits with amounts. They are set against the £650 fee below.

Credit Amount on the page What to ask yourself
Amex Travel credit Up to £600 Does the company book through American Express Travel Online?
Indeed statement credit £300 a year Do we pay for job advertising on Indeed?
Dell Technologies statement credit £150 a year Do we buy from Dell?

The three add up to £1,050 in the best case. That is a ceiling, assuming you use each credit in full on spending the company would make anyway. The Superscript credit and the partner discounts are not counted because the page gives no amounts for them.

A way to run your own numbers

For each credit, ask what the company paid that vendor last year. If the answer is close to the amount shown, the credit is a saving. If the company would have to start buying to use it, the credit is just a discount on a new cost. Count only the first kind and compare the sum with £650.

Cash flow and spending control

The page puts cash flow first. It lists up to 54 days to pay interest free, the Flexible Payment Option for spending power, and streamlined accounting tools. For a company that pays its card bill in full each month, the interest-free period works as a short loan from the card issuer.

Employee cards

The page says that one Business Platinum Card and 19 Business Gold Cards are available to help employees spend securely. The fees for these additional cards are not stated in the text that was checked, so read the terms before you add them.

Travel benefits

The travel benefits are the same family as on the personal card, with business-specific differences.

  • Amex Travel credit: up to £600 to use at American Express Travel Online.
  • Global Lounge Collection: complimentary access to 1,550+ airport lounges worldwide.
  • Car rental: discounts, upgrades and credit with partners.

  • The Hotel Collection: room upgrades and credits at 1000+ properties.
  • International Airline Program: access to lower fares on First and Business Class tickets through American Express Travel.
  • Platinum Travel Services.

Points, referrals and extras

You earn 1X Membership Rewards points for every eligible £1 spent, and 2X for every £1 spent on American Express Travel. Points can be redeemed for travel or gift cards, to pay your bill, or reinvested in the business. A referral earns 18,000 bonus points if the referred business is approved. Other listed extras include a Calm Premium subscription, a complimentary digital subscription to The Times and American Express Experiences.

Service and protection

The page lists a 24/7 Global Assist hotline, emergency Card replacement and 24-hour Business Account management. For protection it lists worldwide travel insurance, purchase protection and refund protection, and refers to a separate insurance document for the details. Read that document before relying on the cover.

A company that started in 1850

American Express's own history says it began in 1850, when three business rivals decided to merge their operations, and that the founding papers were signed on 18 March 1850. The company later became known for travel and for services to businesses and members.

That background fits the Business Platinum's two halves. One half serves the traveller: lounges, hotels and airfares. The other serves the finance team: cash flow, accounting tools and employee cards. A company that needs only one half may find the other half a cost.

Who the card suits

The Business Platinum suits a limited company or LLP that travels, pays its card in full, and already buys from the vendors in the credit list. For that company, £650 can be recovered. For one that would have to change its purchases to use the credits, the fee is a bill for benefits it will not use.

Three checks help the decision:

  1. Which of the three named credits would the company have paid for anyway, and what do they add up to?
  2. Does the business book travel through American Express Travel Online?
  3. Will the card bill be paid in full each month so that the interest-free period works for you?

If your honest total is above £650, the card pays for itself. If it is close, the lounges and the cash-flow period may decide it. If it is far below, a card with a lower fee is a better match.
