On September 29, 2025, Sumitomo Mitsui Card announced its top-ranked "Visa Infinite" card. It sits above the Platinum Preferred as the company's highest card. The annual fee is 99,000 yen (tax included), and no invitation is needed.

This article looks at the Sumitomo Mitsui Card Visa Infinite (the Visa Infinite below) and asks whether it earns its fee. Like the Platinum Preferred, the card is designed around points that build up with yearly spending. The steps in its bonus, however, are larger and assume higher spending. Using only facts confirmed on the official pages, the article works out the break-even point.

Annual fee

99,000 yen (tax included). Family cards are free. No invitation is needed.

Continuation bonus

40,000 points at 4,000,000 yen or more of annual spending, 110,000 points at 7,000,000 yen or more. Nothing is awarded in the first year.

Return

1% as standard (1 point per 100 yen). Up to 10% at partner shops through Reward Up.

Included

A members-only concierge, domestic lounges and Priority Pass.

What to know before you apply

This is a high-fee card with conditions on its benefits. Start there.

The details below follow the official Sumitomo Mitsui Card website as of October 30, 2026. Benefits may change or end without notice. The terms shown at application are the final reference.

The continuation bonus has a 4,000,000 yen threshold

The bonus is awarded only when annual spending reaches 4,000,000 yen. It is 40,000 points at 4,000,000 yen or more and 110,000 points at 7,000,000 yen or more. Below 4,000,000 yen the bonus is zero. It is awarded each year around the end of the month after the month you joined, and nothing is awarded in the first year.

Travel insurance appears to depend on paying with the card

Travel accident insurance is described as up to 100 million yen, overseas and domestic. It reads as requiring that travel costs and the like are paid in advance with this card. The page that was checked does not mention automatic cover. Check the insurance document for how cover applies if you do not pay the trip cost with the card.

Family cover is much smaller

Overseas travel accident insurance for family members is up to 10 million yen. It covers a spouse, relatives living together and unmarried children living apart. That is very different from the main member's 100 million yen.

Lounge conditions are not stated

Overseas airport lounges through Priority Pass are listed, but the number of uses and guest terms are not stated on the page that was checked. In Japan the page names SHARE LOUNGE, SMBC Park Sakae and D's Lounge Tokyo.

Maximum point rates carry conditions

Reward Up's maximum of 10%, Tsumitate Investment's maximum of 6% and V Trip's maximum of 10% all carry conditions. The official page asks you to check them.

Calculating the break-even point

The value of the Visa Infinite is decided by spending. Using only figures on the official page, here is the result from the second year onward. The assumptions: one point is worth one yen, and the base return is 1% (one point per 100 yen).

Annual spending Base points (1%) Continuation bonus Total Against the 99,000 yen fee
3,000,000 yen 30,000 0 30,000 −69,000 yen
4,000,000 yen 40,000 40,000 80,000 −19,000 yen
5,900,000 yen 59,000 40,000 99,000 0 yen
7,000,000 yen 70,000 110,000 180,000 +81,000 yen
10,000,000 yen 100,000 110,000 210,000 +111,000 yen

On this calculation, between 4,000,000 and 7,000,000 yen the dividing line is around 5,900,000 yen a year. Once you reach 7,000,000 yen the bonus jumps to 110,000 points and clearly exceeds the fee. So whether annual spending reaches 7,000,000 yen is the main guide to the card's value.

The table counts only the base rate. Extra points at Reward Up shops are not included. People who use them will find the break-even lower. The official page says the annual award rate against spending is at most 20%.

The difference from the Platinum Preferred

The Platinum Preferred from the same issuer has a 33,000 yen fee, and its bonus is 10,000 points for each 1,000,000 yen of the previous year's spending, up to 40,000. It passes its fee at around 2,000,000 yen a year. The Visa Infinite has a 99,000 yen fee and gives a large bonus only once you reach 7,000,000 yen. Which suits you depends heavily on how much you spend.

Its place as the top card

On September 29, 2025, Sumitomo Mitsui Card announced the arrival of its top-ranked Visa Infinite card. The company placed a card carrying the Visa Infinite name above the Platinum Preferred.

The company positions the card as its highest card for individuals with large spending. It can be applied for without an invitation, but drawing out its value requires large annual spending.

How the points are increased

Here is how the points work, from the official page.

  • Standard return: 1 point per 100 yen (tax included). One point is worth one yen.
  • Selected convenience stores and restaurants: up to 7% with Visa contactless on a smartphone or mobile order.
  • Reward Up Visa Infinite: the standard 1% plus partner shop returns, up to 10% (for use on or after February 24, 2026).
  • Sumitomo Mitsui Card Tsumitate Investment: up to 6% (conditions apply).
  • V Trip: up to 10% when booking overseas hotels (conditions apply).

Concierge, lounges and special experiences

The official page says there is a members-only concierge. Domestic lounges named are SHARE LOUNGE, SMBC Park Sakae and D's Lounge Tokyo, and overseas it is Priority Pass (overseas airport lounge service). For dining there is Fine Dining by Shotai Biyori.

Events listed include members-only special experiences, a museum pass and a premium cinema experience. Hotel privileges and a lounge under its own name are not mentioned on the page that was checked, and this article does not fill the gap by guesswork.

Insurance and protection

  • Travel accident insurance: up to 100 million yen overseas and domestic. It reads as requiring that travel costs are paid in advance with the card. After joining, the cover can be changed through "selectable free insurance".
  • Family overseas travel accident insurance: up to 10 million yen for a spouse, relatives living together and unmarried children living apart.
  • Shopping protection: up to 5 million yen a year. It covers breakage and theft of purchased items for 200 days from the day after purchase. Some items are excluded.

Basic information

The annual fee is 99,000 yen (tax included), and family cards are free. Family card spending is combined with the main member's for points. In principle, applicants must be 20 or over with a stable, continuing income of their own. No income standard is stated. The card is numberless, so the Vpass app is needed to view card details.

Added cards listed include an iD-only card, Apple Pay, Google Pay, Samsung Pay, PiTaPa, WAON, an ETC card and a family card. Instant issue may not be available under some conditions.

Different kinds of spenders

The result depends on how you use the card. Three scenes follow, all assumptions.

Someone who spends 7,000,000 yen or more a year on the card

A person who puts about 580,000 yen or more a month on the card clearly exceeds the fee with the 110,000 point bonus. Business owners and households that gather all payments on one card fit this.

Someone in the 4,000,000 yen range

Between 4,000,000 and 7,000,000 yen the bonus is 40,000 points. Whether you reach 5,900,000 yen is the line between profit and loss. People in this range should compare the Platinum Preferred.

Someone who spends little

Below 4,000,000 yen a year there is no continuation bonus. The 99,000 yen fee can then be recovered only through other benefits, which is hard in practice.

First steps after joining

Most benefits depend on spending and how you use them.

  1. Track your annual spending. See whether the 4,000,000 and 7,000,000 yen steps are within reach.
  2. Check the insurance conditions. Decide before departure whether to pay trip costs with the card.
  3. Install the Vpass app. Needed to see card details on this numberless card.
  4. Check the Reward Up partner shops for places you use.

Comparing with other top cards

Axis What can be confirmed for the Visa Infinite
Annual fee 99,000 yen (tax included); family cards free
Continuation bonus 40,000 points at 4,000,000 yen; 110,000 points at 7,000,000 yen
Joining No invitation needed
Protection Travel insurance up to 100 million yen; reads as requiring payment by card

Put it in the same table as the Platinum Preferred from the same issuer and the suitability by spending becomes clear.

Reviewing it every year

The continuation bonus is decided by annual spending. As the end of the year approaches, check your total and see whether the 7,000,000 yen step is within reach. If not, check before renewal that the fee is justified. Benefits can change without notice, so check the latest official page at each renewal.

Who the card suits

The Visa Infinite, at 99,000 yen (tax included), is designed so that someone who spends 7,000,000 yen or more a year clearly exceeds the fee with a 110,000 point bonus. It also has a concierge, lounges and insurance, though some items give few conditions or numbers.

Three checks help the decision:

  1. Does your annual spending reach 7,000,000 yen? If not, does it reach 5,900,000 yen?
  2. Do you use Reward Up shops and Tsumitate Investment in daily life?
  3. Are you comfortable with insurance that reads as requiring payment by the card?

If you can answer yes to two or more, you can use the fee well. If spending stays below 4,000,000 yen, compare the Platinum Preferred and other cards with lower fees before you decide.
