Mention a platinum card and most people think of concierge desks and airport lounges. The Platinum Preferred from Sumitomo Mitsui Card (the Preferred below) is described on its official page as a points-focused platinum card. The annual fee is 33,000 yen (tax included), and the card puts its weight on points that build up with each year's spending.

This article looks at the Preferred through one question: does it earn its fee? It is not a card with a long list of perks. Understanding how the points are designed, and calculating with your own spending, is the whole decision.

Annual fee

33,000 yen (tax included). Family cards are free.

Continuation bonus

Every year, 10,000 points for each 1,000,000 yen spent in the previous year, up to 40,000 points.

Joining

In principle aged 20 or over with a stable, continuing income of your own. No invitation is needed.

Included

A concierge, lounges at major domestic airports and in Honolulu, and travel accident insurance of up to 50 million yen.

What to know before you apply

A points-focused card gives very different results depending on how you use it. Start with the cautions.

The details below follow the official Sumitomo Mitsui Card website as of October 29, 2026. The official page itself says that conditions of benefits may change or end without notice. The terms shown at application are the final reference.

The continuation bonus depends on last year's spending

The bonus works like this: every year, 10,000 points for each 1,000,000 yen spent in the previous year, to a maximum of 40,000 points. If you do not reach 1,000,000 yen in a year, the bonus is zero. Because it moves in steps of 1,000,000 yen, spending 1,990,000 yen earns only 10,000 points.

Investment instalments do not count

Spending through Sumitomo Mitsui Card Tsumitate Investment, the credit card instalment plan for funds at SBI Securities, is not counted in the spending that decides the continuation bonus. If you feel that instalments help you reach the target, remember that they do not.

Point conditions differ by shop

At Reward Up partner shops, each shop has its own conditions for awarding points. The official page asks you to check the conditions of each shop before you use the card. Do not choose the card on the strength of a large headline rate.

Lounges are domestic

The lounges named on the official page are at major domestic airports and at the airport in Honolulu, Hawaii. This is not a card aimed at a broad overseas lounge network.

Calculating the break-even point

The value of the Preferred is decided by spending. Using only figures from the official page, here is the result from the second year onward. The assumptions: one point is worth one yen, the base rate is 1%, and the continuation bonus is 10,000 points for each 1,000,000 yen of previous-year spending, up to 40,000 points.

Previous-year spending Base points (1%) Continuation bonus Total Against the 33,000 yen fee
1,000,000 yen 10,000 10,000 20,000 −13,000 yen
1,500,000 yen 15,000 10,000 25,000 −8,000 yen
2,000,000 yen 20,000 20,000 40,000 +7,000 yen
3,000,000 yen 30,000 30,000 60,000 +27,000 yen
4,000,000 yen 40,000 40,000 80,000 +47,000 yen

Note that the bonus is set by last year's spending. On this calculation the fee is exceeded at roughly 2,000,000 yen a year. At 1,990,000 yen, the base points of 19,900 and the bonus of 10,000 total 29,900, which falls short. The 2,000,000 yen line is a practical guide.

The table counts only the base rate. Extra points at Reward Up shops and the extra points on foreign currency spending are not included. People who use those well will find the break-even point lower.

How the points are increased

Here is how the points work, as shown on the official page.

The base rate and overseas spending

The standard rate is 1%. For spending in foreign currency, you get 2 extra points for every 100 yen (tax included). This applies only to spending overseas.

Reward Up

Reward Up Platinum Preferred gives additional points on top of the standard 1% when you use the card at partner shops. The page says there are more than 70 partner shops in categories such as convenience stores, cafes and fast food, family restaurants, taxis and accommodation booking sites. The rate varies by shop, and so do the conditions.

Fund instalments

With Sumitomo Mitsui Card Tsumitate Investment, you can receive up to 4% in points according to annual spending on the eligible card. A further bonus of up to 2% is added if you apply for the Olive asset management service and meet the conditions of the asset management benefits. The monthly instalment cap is 100,000 yen. The page presents this as of May 26, 2026 and notes that it may change without notice.

Transport and daily payments

Using an eligible Sumitomo Mitsui card for smartphone contactless payment on trains and buses returns 7% in V points, including the standard points, according to the page. Some operators are excluded, and contactless payment with the physical card does not qualify.

What the points can be used for

Points can be used as one point per yen for shopping and card payments, although some exchange methods do not give one yen per point. The main uses are:

  • V Point Pay app: charge it up and use it for online shopping and at Visa contactless and iD merchants.
  • V Trip: one point is worth about one yen toward hotels, flights and rental cars.
  • V Furusato Nozei: one point is worth one yen toward donations.

Services and protection

The card carries services expected of a platinum card.

  • Concierge: the Visa Platinum Concierge Center is available 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, for restaurant reservations and travel support.
  • Domestic airport lounges: free use at major domestic airports and the airport in Honolulu.
  • Selectable free insurance: you can change the attached insurance to a plan of your choice from the travel security plans.
  • Shopping insurance: covers breakage and theft of items bought with the card, up to 5 million yen a year.
  • Travel accident insurance: up to 50 million yen, overseas and domestic.

Basic information

The annual fee is 33,000 yen (tax included), and family cards are free. The brand is Visa. Payment methods are one payment, two payments, bonus lump sum, revolving and instalments. You can choose a numberless type with no printed number, or a standard type with the details on the back. Numbers and expiry dates are checked in the smartphone app or Vpass.

The eligibility is, in principle, aged 20 or over with a stable, continuing income of your own. The page says an invitation is not needed. The entry door is wide, but the screening criteria are not published, so this article does not describe them.

Different kinds of spenders

The result differs with how you use the card. Three scenes follow. They are assumptions to make the arithmetic clear, not official cases.

Someone who puts daily payments on one card

Groceries, utilities, phone and transport add up. A yearly total of 2,000,000 yen is about 167,000 yen a month. A household that can put roughly 170,000 yen a month on the card earns 20,000 continuation points and 20,000 base points, which is above the fee.

Someone who uses partner shops often

People who use convenience stores, cafes, fast food, family restaurants and taxis build up extra points, and the break-even point drops compared with the base-rate table. Because each shop has its own conditions, check them first.

Someone who spends little

Someone who spends around 1,000,000 yen a year earns only 10,000 continuation points, and with base points that does not reach the fee. A card with a lower fee suits this person better.

First steps after joining

From the official page, these are worth settling early.

  1. Choose the card type, numberless or standard.
  2. Start recording your spending. The bonus depends on the previous year, so keep a yearly total.
  3. Check whether your regular shops are Reward Up partners.
  4. Learn how to use the concierge and the airport lounges.

Comparing with other platinum cards

Axis What can be confirmed for the Preferred
Source of value Points that build up with spending, not a long perk list
Conditions Bonus in steps of 1,000,000 yen of previous-year spending, up to 40,000 points
Travel benefits Lounges at major domestic airports and Honolulu, not a global lounge network

This differs from cards chosen for a bundle of services such as concierge, lounge networks and hotel status. Set it beside the other cards on this site and see which matches your life.

Reviewing it every year

The Preferred decides next year's bonus from last year's spending. As the end of the year approaches, check the total so far and see whether the next step of 1,000,000 yen is within reach. If your spending is falling, check before renewal that the fee is still justified.

Who the card suits

The Preferred is built to win back its 33,000 yen fee each year in points. It is chosen by people who can spend 2,000,000 yen or more a year on it, not by people who want concierge and lounge perks first.

Three checks help the decision:

  1. Can you put 2,000,000 yen or more a year on this card?
  2. Do you use Reward Up partner shops every day?
  3. Do you understand that the bonus depends on last year's spending, and can you track it?

If you can answer yes to two or more, you can use the card in a way that justifies the fee. If your yearly spending stays near 1,000,000 yen, a card with a lower fee suits you better.
