Rakuten Black Card in Japan - Annual Fee, Eligibility and Benefits Explained
The Rakuten Black Card sits at the top of the Rakuten Card line. The official page describes it with the slogan "the black for those who enjoy life to the fullest", and the annual fee is 33,000 yen (tax included). It used to be available only by invitation, but the current official page sets out the conditions for applying.
Rakuten Card began issuing the "Rakuten Card" in July 2005, and in August 2011 the company took the name Rakuten Card Co., Ltd. This article looks at the Rakuten Black Card (the Black Card below) and asks whether it earns its fee. Two things define it: conditions you must meet before you can apply, and a design that gets more valuable the more you use Rakuten group services.
Annual fee
33,000 yen (tax included). Up to two family cards are free.
Eligibility
Hold the Rakuten Premium Card for at least 12 months, with card billings of 5,000,000 yen or more over the past 12 months.
Privileges
Rakuten Ichiba: 4x on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Rakuten Travel, Rakuten Books and Rakuten TV: 3x. Rakuten Securities: a 2% rate.
Insurance
Overseas travel accident insurance up to 100 million yen, domestic up to 50 million yen, and personal property insurance up to 3 million yen.
What to know before you apply
Before the good points, here are the points that most often lead people to misjudge the card.
The details below follow the official Rakuten Card website as of October 29, 2026. Benefits and conditions can change, and the terms shown at application are the final reference.
You cannot apply straight away
The official page says you can apply once you meet two conditions:
- You currently hold a Rakuten Premium Card, and 12 months or more have passed since you took it out, at the point the company determines.
- Your card billings over the 12-month period the company determines total 5,000,000 yen or more.
The page adds that even if you meet the conditions, the company may, in its overall judgment, hold back the notice that invites you to apply. Conversely, members who do not meet the conditions may receive a separate invitation if the company judges them suitable. In short, this is not a card you can apply for right after reading about it. You begin by holding the Rakuten Premium Card.
The way eligibility is judged changes in October 2026
The official page announces that from October 2026 the way eligible applicants are updated will change. The cycle moves from four times a year to monthly. Each month, eligibility is judged on billings for the most recent 12 months ending with the month before the judgment month. Because the judgment is monthly, an invitation could appear in any month in which you meet the conditions.
Five million yen is the entry ticket
Five million yen over 12 months is about 417,000 yen a month. Whether you can move that much spending to a Rakuten card is the first hurdle. The design assumes that people already spend that much, not that people spend that much in order to qualify.
Privileges carry conditions
Multipliers such as 4x on Rakuten Ichiba involve limited-time points. The page asks you to check the conditions for awarding points, including limited-time points. Do not judge by the multiplier alone.
What comes back for the fee
The annual fee is 33,000 yen, or 2,750 yen a month. The main benefits confirmed on the page are set against it below.
| Category | What the page states | What to ask yourself |
|---|---|---|
| Points | 1 point per 100 yen on everyday purchases | Some purchases are excluded or earn a different rate |
| Rakuten Ichiba | 4x every Tuesday and Thursday (plus 1x in your birthday month) | Limited-time points; limits and conditions apply |
| Rakuten Securities | 2% rate for monthly credit card investment in funds | 2 points per 100 yen |
| Rakuten Travel, Rakuten Books, Rakuten TV | 3x (plus 1x in the birthday month for Rakuten Books) | How often do I use them? |
| Rakuten Mobile | A coupon worth 10 GB of data discount every month | Am I a subscriber? |
| Insurance | Overseas up to 100 million yen, domestic up to 50 million yen, personal property up to 3 million yen | Check the conditions |
As a simple calculation, assume one point is worth one yen. Recovering a 33,000 yen fee from the base earn rate of 1% takes 3,300,000 yen of spending a year. If you already meet the 5,000,000 yen condition, the base rate alone gives about 50,000 points, which is above the fee. The assumption matters, though, and actual points depend on excluded payments and conditions.
Value grows with Rakuten group use
The privileges lean toward the Rakuten group.
- Rakuten Ichiba: 4x every Tuesday and Thursday, with one more in your birthday month.
- Rakuten Travel: 3x.
- Rakuten Books: 3x, with one more in the birthday month.
- Rakuten TV: 3x.
- Rakuten Securities: 2 points per 100 yen on monthly credit card investment in funds.
- Rakuten Mobile: a coupon worth 10 GB of data discount each month.
- Rakuten Magazine and Rakuten Music: magazines and music to enjoy.
For people who already use Rakuten services every day, the card is easy to make worthwhile. For people who rarely use them, many of the privileges go to waste.
Concierge and travel support
The Black Card has its own concierge. The official page lists the following services:
- Dining: restaurant introductions, guidance and reservations, including recommendations for destinations abroad.
- Entertainment: tickets for concerts, ballet, opera, sports and musicals, and nightlife arrangements.
- Travel: booking services for hotels, flights and rental cars in Japan and overseas.
- Golf: information on courses and checks on availability.
Details are available from the exclusive privileges in Rakuten e-NAVI, the members' online service. On the travel side, the page lists airport lounges, baggage delivery, Hertz rental cars and the Rakuten Card Travel Desk as included services.
Privileges that depend on the card brand
The Black Card can be chosen in the Mastercard, VISA, JCB and Amex brands, and the page explains that privileges change with the brand you choose. As an example, "Taste of Premium" introduces a benefit at about 250 well-known restaurants nationwide where one person is free when two or more dine, along with golf privileges and services for business trips and travel overseas. Check the list for each brand before you apply.
Insurance and protection
The page says three kinds of insurance are attached automatically.
- Overseas travel accident insurance: up to 100 million yen for death and permanent disability, with cover for injury, illness and damaged belongings during overseas travel.
- Domestic travel accident insurance: up to 50 million yen for death and permanent disability, including fire accidents in hotels and inns.
- Personal property insurance: items bought with the card (10,000 yen or more per item) are covered up to 3 million yen if accidental damage, theft or fire occurs within 90 days of purchase.
The underwriter is Rakuten General Insurance Co., Ltd. Card theft insurance is also included. Check each guide for conditions.
Family cards and added cards
Up to two family cards are free of annual fee, and an ETC card is available as an added card. If your family also uses Rakuten services, family cards raise your total spending and help points accumulate.
Who the card suits
The Black Card combines a concierge, insurance and Rakuten group privileges at an annual fee of 33,000 yen (tax included), which is modest for a black card. To apply, though, you must first hold the Rakuten Premium Card for 12 months or more and spend 5,000,000 yen or more over 12 months.
Three checks help the decision:
- Does your holding period for the Rakuten Premium Card and your billing over the past 12 months reach the conditions?
- Do you use Rakuten Ichiba, Rakuten Travel and Rakuten Securities in daily life?
- Can you picture occasions for the concierge, the airport lounges and the insurance?
If you can say yes to two or more, the Black Card can earn its fee. If not, the Rakuten Premium Card you already hold may be enough.
